Writing the Rails edited by Edward C Goodman c2001 also got on sale at Atlantic Books in DE. No sales tax in DE either

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway - I swiped this one from my husband. This may be the greatest travelogue or maybe the next one is:

Following the Equator by Mark Twain US $14.95

re-edit: Inside Secrets to Finding A Career in Travel by Karen Rubin c2001 US $14.95 really a good one for you Smiley and anyone else - I've read parts of it and really like it. Not only can people go for these careers, but as a travel writer there's lots of angles to write about and groups to interview. Travel articles could probably be written on stuff in this book like the spa resort industry, travel suppliers, theme parks, destination market organizations, etc. Also, Smiley, there are cover letters and resume suggestions and examples in the back. This one's a gold mine of ideas! I've read parts of this book and it's good and may help with article ideas or to consider aspects of the industry you wouldn't even think about.

Good magazines or at least ones I like:

Travel + Leisure
Conde Nast Traveler
National Geographic Traveler
Budget Traveler
Budget Living
Writer's Digest
Writing Basics - a Writer's Digest mag.

Also I have: Arthur Frommer's New World of Travel 5th ed US $19.95 CAN $27.95

Lonely Planet Fodor's and Baedeker's along with Frommer have good guides.

Check out local mags and the Sunday ed of newspapers, local or otherwise, in the Travel Section.

Check out any auto association magazine or website like AAA.

Join a local writer's organization.

I listed prices that were printed on the books. Some I paid full price, some I got on www.amazon.com or walmart.com Walmart usually is cheaper, but on Amazon you can often preview sections of the book to see if it interests you. Many I bought at used bookstores in Johnson City and Knoxville, TN. The Knoxville store is McKay's and the Johnson City one is Mr Kay's. I also bought at Barnes and Noble, Borders, Walden Books, B Dalton, Atlantic Books, and Books A Million. We also have the Walden, Books A Million, and Barnes and Noble member discount card. abebooks.com is another good place to go.

This is just a guideline to refer some books and magazines.

Also I have: Webster's New Encyclopedic Dictionary c2002 US $39.95

Roget's 21st Century Thesaurus c1992 US $19.95 CAN $24.95

A writer's desk reference dictionary would be good, but I haven't located one yet. If you have big bucks or a really good library the most recent unabridged Oxford dictionary would be great. There are volumes to it and hubby says it's expensive, but it probably has every English word under the sun in it.

This is most of what I have, but it's not all. I have others, but I felt these were the most important of what I've got. Like I've said before, I love books. Y'all should see our house. That's a small fraction of the books I own. Also Terry (my husband), and the kids, Eli and Page have their own books. Terry's got more books than I have and the kids are closing in on us!

The Renegade Writer- by Linda Formichelli and Diana Burrell- C 2003- US $14.95 (Barnes and Noble)- totally unconventional guide to freelance writing success. Way cool book that makes sense- Bob Bly the fav copywriting guy gave two testimonials and he really liked it along with Lisa Collier Cool. Recommend this one highly. These gals write many magazine articles.

The-Well Fed Writer- by Peter Bowerman- C 2000- US $19.95 (Barnes & Noble)- testimonial from Bob Bly the fav copywriting guy and Peter dedicated the book to Bob. Mainly about copywriting and business writing, but he's got good ideas for any type of freelance writer going into business for themselves. Does touch upon writing trade articles and newsletters. Where's the business, prospecting, self employment, ebb and flow of work and clients. He writes well. I've just started reading this one. He has another book due out this summer 2004 and I think it's called The Well-Fed Writer Second Helpings. I'll probably buy it too. Check out Peter's web site at www.wellfedwriter.com Women heads up- he has a For Women Only section filled with good stuff. Check it out and subscribe to his zine if he can get his e-mail link corrected or whatever is needed to get it working properly. I also got his Back For Seconds book. Check his site out and get his monthly newsletter. He promotes AWAI and is kind in e-mail responses.

The Writer's Mentor- by Cathleen Rountree- C 2002- US $16.95 (Books A Million)- a guide to putting passion on paper, creating a writing sanctuary, when to write, knowing what to write, practice- keeping the focus, overcoming the fear of writing and the inner life of the writer. Each chapter ends with The Writer's Mentor At The Movies. Also in the chapters are areas where The Writer's Mentor Suggests...

I'll be back to re-edit. I've got 15 more to put in here. I mention where I purchase the books and if I get them at a used book price. Check out those used bookstores especially if you live in or near a major college town. You can get good deals and even some older guide freebies. Also if you shop at Barnes & Noble, Borders, Walden Books and Books A Million get a card membership. If you buy a bunch of books the savings with the card will more than pay for the card. Also try walmart.com amazon.com and other online bookstore sites. Atlantic Books is another great place if you live near one. DE has them. Check out your Goodwill stores and library sales of used books. Walden Books is doing away with their membership cards, which means I won't shop there much unless it's a blowout sale.

This should give you an idea of what's out there. There's still 11 more I hope to buy. hey what can I say, I love good books!

Trease, although I am a copywriting student, that is an excellent list. My wife and I love books too, and when we moved into our new house March 2004 we turned our Dining Room into an office/library with two walls filled with books, not to mention books strewn throughout the rest of our house in our room, the kids rooms, and the playroom.

I think your suggestions on Walmart.com and Amazon to buy is excellent, another place I get lots of books from is local thrift shops because lots of times people go there just for clothes or toys and never even check out the books, I have even gotten whole encyclopedia sets there cheaply. (As a young boy, I used to read the encyclopedia for fun. Cool )

On a sad note, my nephew and his wife came over at Christmas and she asked, "How did you get all these books?" She was astonished when we told her we bought them. They are in their early twenties, and it makes me sad that schools and society doesn't put as much emphasis on reading as there should be.

tracy

ps. also, if you live in a larger community, lots of libraries have book sales, I have picked up quite a few there as well for pretty cheap.

Melissa,
Have you checked out her other book? It's "Without Reservations The Travels of an Independent Woman."

I've been collecting these books since the end of September 2003. I haven't read most of them, but I will read them all in time. I have skimmed them all and read parts of each one though. I always do that if possible, or check to see if Amazon has any reviews or write ups, before I buy a book.

Y'all can print the library list out and then go check to see the ones you like or if you find anything you feel is better. I tend to gravitate towards women writers, as the majority of what I have is from women writers. But one key thing I do is look at the writing style. If it clicks and I have the bucks, I buy it.

The books I've been using lately in my writing classes include Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss (I highly recommend it for anyone wanting instruction in punctuation and a good laugh) and Style: Ten Lessons in Clarity and Grace by Joseph Williams. Buy the first--the hardcover is no more than $15--and go to the library for the Williams (or buy used)--it's almost $40 for a paperback of maybe 120 pages.

Eats, Shoots and Leaves is a terrific book on clear writing. Another is The Transitive Vampire by Karen Elizabeth Gordon.

Glad to see Bruce Holland Rogers' book Word Work in the list. He'll be glad, too. He's a friend of mine.

Didn't see this on the list, but highly recommend it to any aspiring travel writer: THE ART OF TRAVEL, by Alain de Botton. In particular, note how Botton "discovers" new experiences in the everyday.

Trease

I started reading your list and said Geez I wonder how long this is... I checked and then read the responses and it looked good enough to drag over to the "AWAI Travel Folder" I have on my desktop ... now it won't get lost and i will read it later when i graduate to the travel writers course!

Larry

P.S. I can tell you some interesting stories about Jack Canfield ... Chicken soup author. He is a friend of mine. You know he runs a workshop for the authors of the Chicken Soup books and has an endless list of ideas for future books. It is a gold mine!

I am currently reading "Writing Articles from the Heart" by Marjorie Holmes. I like it because it's very concise. Nancy Very Happy

Hello All,

What books have you all read lately?

Have you been on any trips paid for?

How are you allowing the Travel Writing program or the travel writer within your or should I say the adventurer within you?

What are some of the experiences that you have truly enjoyed in your readings and in your trips?

Has it changed your perspectives in your day to day lifestyle, please think back to the time before you took that first major leap to travel and what you are thinking about and now after having been on that trip what have you kept since that very moment when you returned home.

Did you learn something and did make you decide to change your previous lifestyle before the trip?

I bet it has, it has also provided you with the story to tell others and to encourage them to travel as well hasn't it?

I have bumped into so many people and have motivated them to take a chance and to at least take one major risk in their lives and to go for it.

I mean traveling to a place they have only dreamed of and have seen a few of them take that trip and completely changed their lives and they have never stopped thanking me, that is the feeling that I truly enjoy, I do not stay in contact with them that much but everytime I see them they are always happy to see me.

Best regards,

Mr. Julio

The Old Patagonian Express - Paul Theroux - ISBN 9780395521052 If I could write about my travels this well... It's one of the best.

Wild Mind by Natalie Goldberg is the follow up to Writing Down the Bones, also very good.

The Long Quiet Highway by Natalie Goldberg focuses on getting your writing into sell able form and living the writers life.

Yes I'm a book addict too. Laughing
